ConTEXTing and TwitterPated Poems

ConTEXTing Poetry is a poem created on a wireless mobile (cell) phone, in an SMS (short message service) application, where either the number pad or, in later instances, a QWERTY keyboard, is used to spell out words and make a poem. That poem is then typically sent to another SMS-enabled mobile wireless phone as a “text message.” TwitterPated Poetry is similar but on Twitter. This definition is on my blog at http://cyranowriter.wordpress.com

Because it is character-limited (160 characters per SMS), a ConTEXTing Poem is characterized by abbreviations, and by use of the "/" (as opposed to a hard return) to indicate the end of the line. TwitterPated Poetry has only 140 characters, so is even tighter in style. My blog represents the first known on-line discussion and samples of these new poetic forms.

ConTEXTing Poetry andTwitterPated Poetry are poetic conundrums, quasi-literary forms forced on society by the limitations of mobile and on-line technology. Yet, because of the very availability, mobility and immediateness of its delivery mechanisms, it has the potential of making poets out of all of us, of capturing our most creative and poetic moments as they happen: In a car. On a bus. Walking to the store. To work. To School. Shopping. Eating lunch. Awakening at night. The fear and danger is that, because of the transient nature of text messages and Tweeting, both ConTEXTing Poetry and TwitterPated Poetry may be lost unless poets take steps to save their (largely improvisational) work.
